Making a Difference

In the book Chicken Soup for the Soul, there is a story about a man walking on the beach tossing starfish back into the ocean. There were thousands of starfish washed up on the beach destined to die from the coming day’s sun exposure. Another person asked the man why he bothered to throw the starfish back; he could not make a difference. The man looked at the starfish in his hand, tossed it back in the ocean and responded, “Made a difference to that one.”

Most of us like to feel we are making a positive difference. Blue Valley Recreation programs do make a difference and are possible only through the collaborative effort of numerous volunteers and part-time staff. In many cases, the volunteers and part-timers receive a great satisfaction from their efforts, but Blue Valley Rec wanted to take recognizing our staff a step further. The employees of Blue Valley Rec have funded two scholarships to assist members of our staff continue their education. The scholarships are financed entirely by voluntary payroll deductions by our full-time staff. We look forward to continuing this tradition for years to come.
